Director, Research and Instruction

The office of information resources and technology (IRT) provides information technology, informatics, and knowledge management services in support of the school of medicine's clinical, research, and educational missions. As part of IRT, Lane Library and Knowledge Management Center (KMC) creates opportunities for discovery, translation, learning, and collaboration by providing faculty, staff, and students with easy, efficient access to in-context knowledge whenever and wherever it is needed to support patient care, education, and research. The KMC focuses on acquisition and integration of knowledge sources, consultation and instruction in information finding and manipulation, learning spaces and computing labs, and technology support for the curriculum. Reporting to the associate dean for knowledge management, director of Lane Medical Library and KMC in the Stanford School of Medicine’s IRT, the director of research and instruction is responsible for the strategic direction of research and instructional services, the knowledge navigation skills program, and the departmental liaison program. This position includes responsibility for identifying innovative user-centered service initiatives; coordinating facilities planning; supervising a staff of 8 FTE; collaborating with programs across IRT, the school, and the medical center; and liaisoning with libraries on campus. The director for research and instruction is a member of Lane Medical Library’s senior management team, which has the responsibility to create the overall vision and guide the process of setting priorities; develop appropriate strategies in achieving objectives; enable successful outcomes through the best use of library assets including, staff, funds, collections, technology, and facilities; and ensure world-class knowledge-based services in support of the school’s research, clinical, and educational mission.
Qualifications: MS in library science or related field required. Minimum of 7 years’ related experience required. A strong understanding of the digital library environment including clinical reference, research literature, library/learning facilities, and information technology. A strong understanding of biomedical research, clinical practice, and medical education in an academic medical center environment. Technical knowledge and management skills to deliver world-class, technology-enabled research services, document access and delivery, remote digital library services, and integration of knowledge navigation in the learning environment. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty and information technologists in designing and implementing innovative virtual and physical research environments. Associate Director, Collection Resources
General Information: The University of Southern California (USC) Norris Medical Library seeks an innovative, energetic, and service-oriented individual to provide outstanding leadership for the library’s division of collection resources. In addition to collection development responsibilities, the successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating the library’s efforts in open access and scholarly communication issues including archiving and preservation, particularly for digital collections. The Norris Medical Library is an academic research library serving the schools and departments of medicine, pharmacy, occupational science, and biokinesiology/physical therapy. The library is strongly user focused and committed to providing faculty, students, and staff access to a wide variety of electronic information resources, including books, journals, bioinformatics tools, databases, evidence-based resources, and resources available via personal digital assistants. Responsibilities: Print book and journal collection development: Select appropriate books and journals for purchase, oversee approval plans, solicit and respond to faculty input, weed older materials, maintain awareness of current health sciences campus (HSC) programs and research priorities, curate historical collections. Electronic book and journal collection development: Select appropriate electronic books and journals for purchase; collaborate with head, Metadata and Content Management, in negotiating licenses for new electronic resources and in monitoring their use. Scholarly communication monitoring: Coordinate library’s efforts in open access and scholarly communication issues including archiving and preservation, particularly for digital collections.
Financial oversight: Prepare and monitor collection budget of $2.8 million for print and electronic book, journal, and database purchases. Oversight of divisional operations: Work with head, Metadata and Content Management, to supervise staff, adjust work assignments, plan special projects, and plan and implement technical services automated systems. ILS administration: Supervise system use by library staff; plan and manage system upgrades, modify system parameters as needed, respond to staff requests for assistance, produce management reports. Track ILS technology and developments including open source options. Serve on the senior management team assisting the director in library planning, management, and innovation. Prepare administrative and statistical reports for the director. Professional involvement: Assume leadership positions in local and national library organizations and contribute to publications and conferences.
Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school and a minimum of 5 years' experience, preferably in an academic health sciences library. Strong oral and written skills. The University of Southern California (USC) Norris Medical Library seeks an innovative and dynamic librarian to provide leadership and expertise relating to acquiring, managing, and providing access to print and electronic resources for the Norris Medical Library and Wilson Dental Library. This position offers the opportunity to creatively apply emerging technologies to improve information access in support of the library’s mission. Norris Medical Library is located on the USC Health Sciences Campus in Los Angeles. The library contains 174,841 volumes and receives 846 current print periodicals and 2,425 current electronic journals. The University of Illinois–Chicago (UIC) Library of the Health Sciences seeks a faculty librarian for its information services department. The Library of the Health Sciences supports UIC programs in medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, associated health professions, public health, and doctoral programs in basic and clinical science. The library serves as the Regional Medical Library for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Greater Midwest Region, and is one of the largest health sciences libraries in the United States. Position Scope: The Medical Sciences Library at Texas A&M University Libraries seeks an enthusiastic, innovative, and service-oriented individual to provide leadership and direction for all user services provided within physical library spaces. This includes direct client services (circulation, reserves, interlibrary loan, and basic reference), the onsite collection, and all aspects of the library as a place (planning and design of all user spaces, recommendations for specific service parameters, and the relative mix of user and collection spaces). The onsite services librarian plays a key role in the design, development, and implementation of onsite services offered by the medical sciences library as well as marketing and promotion of services and monitoring of their success. This is an academic appointment carrying full faculty status and responsibilities including research, publication, and service to meet both the libraries’ and the university’s requirements for tenure and promotion.
Required: ALA-accredited master’s degree (or equivalent); experience in circulation, reserves, or interlibrary loan; supervisory experience; evidence of effective collaboration and team membership; excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to approach issues and solve problems creatively; demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritize assignments; demonstrated ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse population.
Preferred: Experience in a health sciences library environment; knowledge or experience with DOCLINE, ILLiad, or Ares software; knowledge of medical, veterinary, or life sciences literature; knowledge or experience in marketing projects.
Salary: Faculty rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience; salary is not less than $45,000.
